trzeba chyba specjalnie przedstawiać. Nawet jeśli mieliście okazję
przeczytać zaledwie jedną jego książkę, jego wyrazisty styl oraz
tematyka prawdopodobnie została Wam w głowie. Tu przyznać muszę, że osobiście nie jestem jego stałym czytelnikiem - na koncie mam tylko „Stalową kurtynę” i „Czerwoną apokalipsę”. Tylko i aż, bo lektura tych dwóch powieści wystarczyła, by Vladimir Wolff, pisarz o pseudonimie przypominającym alias drugowojennego agenta, pozostawił w mojej pamięci trwały ślad. Na tyle trwały, że postanowiłem wrócić do prac autora i sprawdzić jego ostatnią twórczość.
Vladimir Wolff doesn’t
have to be introduced in any special way. Even if you had a chance to
read only one book, his distinct style and subjects discussed probably
got stuck in your head. Here, I have to admit honestly that I am not his regular reader – I’ve read only “The Steel Curtain” and “The Red Apocalypse”. It’s only and enough at the same time, because these two books were just fine to make Vladimir Wolff, a writer with a pseudonym that sounds like an alias of a WW2 agent, stay for long in my memory. And it was high time to refresh it and check the author's recent work.

Powieść, dzięki językowi, jakim posługuje się autor, ma spory potencjał filmowy i szczerze przyznam, że ciekawie byłoby zobaczyć ją kiedyś na dużym ekranie zamiast kolejnych wersji „Olimpu w ogniu”, „Londynu w ogniu” czy „Świata w płomieniach”. W przeciwieństwie do amerykańskich superprodukcji, Vladimir Wolff nie lansuje jednego herosa z biało-czerwoną naszywką, ale przedstawia Polskę jako kraj, który w pewnej sytuacji, jak np. ta zobrazowana w „Metalowej burzy”, może mieć poważny wpływ na losy świata.

The book, thanks to the language the author is using, has a serious cinematic potential and honestly I would really like to see it on big screen instead of the next versions of “Olympus Has Fallen”, “London Has Fallen” or “White House Down”. Contrary to the American super-productions, Vladimir Wolff does not promote one super-hero with a white-and-red patch, but presents Poland as a country that – in certain situations, e.g. like the one depicted in “The Metal Storm”, might have a serious influence on the world’s lot.

Co ciekawe, Vladimir Wolff zgrabnie przeskakuje między różnymi miejscami akcji powieści, wykorzystując jako punkty odniesienia nie tylko pierwszo-, ale i drugoplanowych czy epizodycznych bohaterów. Mamy tym samym okazję ku temu, by poznać różne strony konfliktów i bardziej wciągnąć się w fabułę.

What is interesting, Vladimir Wolff skillfully jumps from various places of action, using as points of reference the main characters as well as those from the background. That results in getting to know better both sides of the conflicts and getting more involved in the plot.

Ta zaś jest to udanym połączenie motywów znanych nam tak z filmów, literatury, jak i otaczającej nas rzeczywistości. Zamachy na samoloty z przywódcami najpotężniejszych państw na pokładzie od razu skojarzą się nam z katastrofą prezydenckiego Tupolewa w Smoleńsku. Dziesiątkująca Stany Zjednoczone zaraza nie raz gościła już na ekranie jako broń masowego rażenia rozpylana przez wszelakiego pochodzenia terrorystów. Konflikt Grecji i Turcji na tle historycznych wojen etnicznych (religijnych, kulturowych) też nie powinien dziwić. Państwo Islamskie i wojna z Syrii to oczywiście czasy nam współczesne, od których to tematów rudno byłoby uciec. Mimo iż „skądś to wszystko znamy”, nie można mówić, moim zdaniem, o mało oryginalnej fabule. Co najważniejsze, w środku tego zamieszania pojawia się zaś Polska, a dokładnie jej siły zbrojne.
Speaking of the plot, it’s a successful combination of motifs known from movies, literature as well as the reality around us and history. The attacks on planes with leaders of the most powerful countries remind one of the catastrophe of the Polish President’s Tupolew plane in Smolensk. A disease decimating the US has already been present in the movies as a weapon of mass destruction spread by various terrorists. A conflict between Greece and Turkey, with all ethnic wars in the history (based on religious and cultural differences) is not surprise at all. The Islamic State and war in Syria are, of course, the modern times and an issue that it’s hard to avoid. Although probably „we’ve seen that already”, one cannot say, in my opinion, that the plot is not original. And what is the most important here, in the middle of this mess, Poland stands out – to be specific, the Polish armed forces.
Vladimir Wolff w swoich książkach daje wyraz ogromnej wiary w polski oręż, jak i potencjał polityczny naszego kraju na arenie międzynarodowej. Choć z pewnością wśród czytelników znajdą się sceptycy, którzy jego pisarską wyobraźnie i fabułę odbiorą jako czystą fantazję, to warto jednak pamiętać, że: po pierwsze jest to fikcja literacka, w której wszystko jest możliwe. Po drugie: mieliśmy już chyba dostatecznie dużo martyrologii i nie zaszkodzi wreszcie spuścić solidny łomot „złym kolesiom”. Po trzecie – rzeczywistość i historia zaskakiwała nas już nie raz scenariuszami, które wcześniej widzieliśmy jedynie w kategoriach czysto literackich lub filmowych (choć przyznać muszę, że końcówka "Metalowej burzy" była dla mnie lekko „kosmiczna”). A skoro filmowym aspekcie mowa, pozwólcie, iż powtórzę, że książkę Vladimira Wolffa „Metalowa burza” chętnie zobaczyłbym w wersji na dużym ekranie. Póki co, powieść zadziałała na mój własny projektor w głowie. Polecam wam odpalenie za jej pomocą waszych!
Vladimir Wolff in his books expresses a great faith in the Polish military, as well as Poland’s political potential in the international arena. And although many of the readers might get skeptical and treat his writer’s imagination and plot as a pure fantasy, they need to keep in mind that: first of all, it is fiction where everything is possible. Second, we’ve had enough of martyrdom and it would be good to finally kick some ass of the “bad guys”. And last but not least, the reality and history have already surprised us many times with scenarios that we used to perceive as taken from books or movies (although I have to admit that the ending kicked me a bit “out of space”). And speaking of movies, let me repeat that I would be happy to see Vladimir Wollf’s “The Metal Storm” in the big screen. So far, the book has already turned on my own projector in my head. I recommend you that you take the book now and do the same with yours!
