Sprawiedliwość w metrze - filmowy hołd czy jednak remake? / Justice in the subway - a movie tribute or a remake?

Subway is a very cinematic place that might become a background for many scenes – from romantic goodbye’s to shootouts. A list of movies where the stations or carts constituted one of the characteristic scenographies and became memorable, is as long as the tracks. An example here might be Morton Freedgood's "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three", made in 1974, and starring Bernard Shaw, which was remade twice.

However, just like there memorable scenes in the subway, there are motion pictures that became classic of the genre and which other directors pay homege to, using the same motif or place of the action and telling a similar story. An example here is the vengance taken when law is helpless and administration of justice on one's own. It can be done in many ways. One of the mechanisms: the main protagonist faces a traged - his loved ones are hurt by brutal punks that the police cannot get and even if they are trialed by the court, the sentence is not right. Helpless and without any hope for justice, the protagonist decides to administer it on his own and declares war on the crime world.

A perfect example is a 1974 movie directed by Michael Winner – „Death Sentence”, based on the novel by Brian Garfield, starring Charles Bronson as an architekt, Paul Kersey. His family was assaulted by a gang – wife beaten to death, daughter – raped. The police, of course, is helpless.

The movie was followed by four further parts and a kind of a remake of its sequel – a movie equally good and brutal – „Death Sentence” (2007, directed by James Wan), starring Kevin Bacon. However, it not the remake I'd like to talk about here, but a movie, where one of the scenes is a tribute paid to the director of "Death Wish" and Bronson himself. What I mean here is "The Brave One" (2007, directed by Neil Jordan), where the main protagonist is a radio reporter - Erica Bain. The girl and her fiance are mugged during their evening walk in the park - a brutal attack ends with the boyfriend's death and a long rehab and trauma of the girl. Of course, the police is helpless.

What happens next? Both Paul and Erica decide to administer justince on their won - that's the plot in a nutshell, I don't want to get any spoilers in case you haven't seen the movies. And why did I mention the subway at the beginning? Because we have a scene in "Death Wish" that in my opinion inspired the creators of "The Brave One". And they distinctly underlined this inspiration by shooting their scene in almost the same way.

We have two muggers who . In both cases, they brawl in the cart and scare the passangers so that Paul Kersey as well as Erica Bain are left alone with the pair of punks. And in both cases, one of the muggers draws a knife.

Efekt? I Paul, i Erica wyciągają broń i strzelają – ku zupełnemu zaskoczeniu złodziei.

The result? Paul and Erica draw their handguns in return and shoot – at a totally suprised muggers. They fire the same number of shots (four), they only have different weapons. In case of Paul, it is a .32 Colt Police Positive revolver that he receives as a gift. Erica buys her firearm – a 9x19mm Kahr K9 pistol, from a gun dealer, having been rejected the possibility of its legal purchase.

It is just one scene. But when comparing these two movies, you might get the impression that while „Death Sentece” is a remake of „Death Wish 2”, „The Brave One” might actually be a remake of the first part. Maybe it is something more than a tribute. The mechanism is just the same. The only difference is that the main protagonist is a woman and there are some minor changes in the plot. Beacause the so called weaker sex is not so weak and might administer justice just like men do – also in the darkness of the subway.

Drogowskaz filmowo-historyczny / A cinamatic-historical roadsign

„Hart’s War” (2002, directed by Gregory Hoblit) is a war drama, but also to a large extent – a courtroom drama. It is one of the movies that build the image of African-Americans’ situation in the US military during World War II – the military forces that were defending democracy in Europe and the Pacific, but executing segregation that the Nazis would surely be fond of – segregation both in the society and in the army ranks.

Steven Spielberg).

However, segregation in the movies is a broad subject, definitely worth a separate post to discuss it, that is why here I would like to focus on one of the opening scenes of „Hart’s War”. It’s one of those that remind one of the pictures once seen, famous and characteristic, just like the photographs taken by Robert Capa during the Normandy beach landing that we recall while watching „Saving Private Ryan” (1998, directed by Steven Spielberg).

Kapitan Swann, słysząc dziwne wskazówki odnośnie drogi i czujnie obserwując żandarmów zauważa ślady przestawiania drogowskazu do Malmedy i St. Vith. Sięga po "czterdziestkę piątkę" (pistolet Colt M1911A1 kal. .45 ACP) schowaną w kaburze i… sami zobaczcie.

That was also my case a couple of years ago when I saw „Hart’s War” and today, on the 70th anniversary of the counter-offensive known as Battle of the Bulge, I recalled a certain scene. It is December 1944, the action takes place in Belgium, near the border with Germany. Lt. Thomas Hart (Colin Farrell), together with his superior officer (Rocky Marshall) stop at the military police post. Capt. Swann, hearing strange instructions concerning the road and watching the MPs carefull, notices that the roadsign to Malmedy and St. Vith has been twisted. He reaches for his "forty-five" (a .45 ACP Colt M1911A1) holstered by his side and... see yourselves.

The supposed MPs were no one but, among others, the SS paratroopers of Otto Skorzeny, dressed up like Americans. According to the plan of the counteroffensive in the Ardennes that started on 16th December, 1944, they operated behind the American lines, causing disinformation and chaos (it was the so called operation „Griffin” - "Unternehmen Greif"). To unmask them (the saboteurs spoke perfect English and some of them had almost no foreign accent), the Americans interrogated suspicious-looking soldiers, asking about details that only a true Yank would be familiar with, such as the statistics of the baseball league or names of the Donald Duck’s nephews. When captured in US uniforms, Germans had to face firing squad, so Skorzeny's men wore their own uniforms underneath.

Ale dosyć o spadochroniarzach! Scena z żandarmami przypomniała mi o słynnych zdjęciach zrobionych podczas ofensywy, ukazujących żołnierzy „Kampfgruppe Peiper” (Grupy Bojowej SS-Obersturmbannführera Joachima Peipera, a dokładniej 1 Dywizji Pancernej SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler) koło widocznych w filmie drogowskazów do St. Vith i Malmedy, niewykluczone, że już wcześniej przekręconych w celu wprowadzania w błąd Amerykanów, zwłaszcza tych nieznających terenu. Żołnierze siedzą nad mapami w charakterystycznym pojeździe amfibijnym - Schwimmwagenie (VW typ 166), jeszcze pełni nadziei na powodzenie kontrofensywy i wygraną w bitwie o Ardeny.

Enough about the paratroopers! The scene with the MPs reminded of one of the famous photographs taken during the offensive, showing soldiers of the Kampfgruppe Peiper (a battle group of SS-Obersturmbannführer Joachim Peiper and to be more specific - the 1st SS-Panzer Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler) near the roadsigns to St. Vith and Malmedy, visisble in the movie, possibly already twisted in order to mislead the Americans, especially those who didn't know the terrain. The troops debate over the maps in a characteristic amphibious vehicle - the Schwimmwagen (VW Type 166), still full of hope of the a successful offensive and victory in the battle of the Bulge. Of course, they are not dressed up as Americans (that was the role of Skorzeny's paratroopers), they wear regular uniforms, standard for their formation.

There is also another picture, taken probably in the same place, showing a different SS officer and damaged roadsigns to St. Vith and Malmedy. The latter became infamous as a place of the massacre of American POWs and Belgian civilians. This is also mentioned in "Hart's War" in a simplified way - right after his failed escape in a jeep, Hart falls into a trench full of G.I.'s frozen corpses.

Kilkadziesiąt sekund. Tyle trwa opisana scena. Ujęcie przekręconego drogowskazu to dosłownie chwila. A sam film nabiera wówczas jeszcze większej wartości edukacyjnej.

A couple of dozens of seconds. That's how long the scene takes. The shot of the twisted roadsigns takes a moment. Nothing special at first, but that’s the magic of the cinema that provides us with pictures to initiate a stream of consciousness in our heads –a stream of assocations and memories - the cinema that becomes a kind of a roadsign - to make us connect the stories and discover them again. And the movie itself becomes even more valuable in terms of education it provides.

Skrzyżowanie z drogowskazami - gdzieś w Ardenach, gdzieś na filmowej taśmie "Wojny Harta". Oto moje filmowo-historyczne wspomnienie, z 16 grudnia A.D. 2014.

A crossroad with roadsigns - somewhere in the Ardennes, somewhere on the tape of "Hart's War". This is my cinematic-historical memory, dated 16 December, A.D. 2014.

Trailer do historii o Powstaniu Warszawskim / A trailer of the story about the Warsaw Uprising

Last eye-witnesses of World War II are passing away. Soon, about the things that happened between 1939 and 1945, we will learn not from people, but only from books and movies, because all those who fought in the war for freedom and survived it, they will simply be gone. That is why it is good that Jan Komasa made „City 44”. I am reviewing this movie, although I probably shouldn’t. And I think so because I have an impression that it was not made for viewers like me (born in 1983), viewers who are familiar „Sewer” (1956) or „The Columbs” (1970). It was made for teenegers, students of gymnasiums and secondary schools. Made with a thought that they will go to the cinema with their teachers. Made with hope that after having seen the movie, regardless of the opinion about it, a small percentage of them will be willing to watch other productions about the Warsaw Uprising, read books, see photo albums – so that the memory and the will to talk about the insurgents remain – so that in 10 or 15 years another film will be made and will depict those days from another perspective.

The perspective of „City 44” is love. Fast, impatient and young, in case of many participants of the Uprising – the first, the only one, till the end. The Uprising is a background for the feelings and relations between three protagonists: Stefan, Kama and Biedronka, and also between a couple of their friends. The physical aspects of love (the first kiss, the first sex) are the main mofits in the scenes that caused most of the controversies and comments.

The scene when Stefan and Biedronka are kissing surrounded by bullets, flying in slow motion, I treated as a metaphore, an explosion of emotions in hearts of these two charcters, not as a real thing. But I have to admit that it was a humorous break – I’m not sure if this is what Jan Komasa wanted to achieve. The other scene is the one with shots (again in slow motion) of a passionate sex of Stefan and Kama interwining with the images of insurgents going through the sewers to the attack position, backgrounded with an agrressive dubstep. And while I don’t have anything against the scene itself, the music was odd here for me. But again, the reason might be the fact that I am not the target audience of the movie. The audience is someone that got used to videoclip-style shots, enhanced colors, explicit sex scenes and nudity (also those justified), dirty languge or experiments with music and images, and examples of these are also a German love song and Czeslaw Niemen’s „This is a Strange World” during two shootout scenes (not to mention Lana Del Rey's song in the trailer). But that’s not all.

Osobiście zwróciłem uwagę na ujęcia rodem z gier typu FPP (First Person Perspective), ukazujących – dzięki kamerze umieszczonej bezpośrednio na broni, perspektywę strzelca. To także zaliczyłbym do elementu, który sugeruje do jakiej publiczności jest kierowany film – do takiej, która znajdzie punkt odniesienia do gier typu „Counter Strike”, „Call of Duty” czy „Medal of Honor”. I w ten sposób będzie w stanie wyobrazić sobie emocje w starciu z przeważającym pod każdym względem przeciwnikiem.

Personally, I noticed the shots typical for the FPP (First Person Perspective) games, presenting, thanks to the camera attached to the weapon, a shooter’s perspective. That also I would include on the list of the elements that suggest what audience the movie is made for – for those who will find here a point of reference to games such as „Counter Strike”, „Call of Duty” or „Medal of Honor”. And in this way, they would be able to imagine emotions in the fight with the enemy that is superior in all that counts in the battle.

„City 44” is brutal. It would be weird it if wasn’t and Komasa doesn’t spare us the images of blood and corpses. Because it is also a sign of our times – we are surrounded with brutal images, broadcasts from violent riots on the other side of the world, so the director almost literally throws body parts right in our faces and dampen our good mood with a bucket of blood of those killed in the explosion caused by a SdKfz 301 Borgward B IV explosives carrier (of course, he does so with exaggeration). On the other hand, Komasa leaves certain things unsaid, as in the scene when in an abandoned hospital, full of wounded and dying, Biedronka is found by a Dirlewanger’s soldiers, who sends her a loathful kiss. What happened next? We can imagine.

And it is Zofia Wichłacz in the role of Biedronka presented the best acting skills of the leading actors. In my opinion, the scene „Don’t ever leave me!” was played with all her heart, real emotions and truly moving. At the same time, however, the script put her in scenes that were poor in terms of dialogues, such as the one when Kama tells Biedronka what she thinks of her, using the infamous f-word, what reminded me rather of the talks one can sometimes hear between present-day teenage girls arguing over some cute Johnny-boy.

A lot more attention drew the actors that appeared on the screen as the supporting – Michał Żurawski as „Czarny”, Tomasz Schuchardt in the role of „Kobra” or Antoni Królikowski who played „Beksa” (although his acting here reminded me of his role of Kamil in „Days of Honor”)

Since we’re talking about roles, an interesting thing is the guest performance of Max Riemelt who plays an arogant German soldier, taken prisoner by the insurgents. A few years ago, the actor played in „Napola: Before the Fall” (Napola, 2004, a pic below), a movie taking place in an elite Nazi school, and in „The Wave” (Die Welle, 2008), a film prooving that in the center of Europe painfully experienced with the horror of World War II, one doesn’t need much effort to start totalitarian reigns again.

Regardless of the acting and presentation of protagonists according to the scripts, a big advantage of the movie is the image of Warsaw during the Uprising - its streets and districts demolished by war. It’s a very convincing apocalyptic picture that remains in memory, complemented with great special effects.

W realizacji „Miasta 44” wzięły udział m.in. GRH „Zgrupowanie Radosław”, GRH "Flak Abteilung"GRF„Bemowo” oraz GRH "Pomerania 1945", po części rekonstruujące zwyrodniałych oprawców Brygady Dirlenwangera i inne niemieckie oddziały.

What should be appreciated are the movie costumes, reflecting perfectly the 1940s fashion, and the fact that re-enactment groups were engaged in the production. Of course, it is not the first time, but it should be underlined that if you want to present the army in the most realistic way – uniforms, weapons, how it fights and moves, you should definitely use the help of the real experts. A couple of re-enactment groups participated in the production of „City 44”, e.g. GRH „Zgrupowanie Radoslaw”, GRH "FLAK Abteilung", GRF „Bemowo” and GRH „Pomerania 1945”, and they portrayed e.g. the degenerates from the Dirlewanger Group and other German units.

A film & military attraction is a replica of a PzKpfw V Panther tank from the Museum of Military Technic „Gryf” and an original Jagdpanzer Hetzer, that is light tank destroyer (unfortunately, in the movie it is visible only for a moment) and a Goliath tracked mine, immobilized and destroyed in the movie with a British PIAT from the airdrops. However, it was strange for me that no vehicle captured by the insurgents, apart from the „trap-tank”, was depicted.

Moją uwagę zwróciło występujące w scenie szturmu Dirlewangerowców działko p-lot 2cm Flak 38, a wykorzystane do ostrzelania budynku zajmowanego przez powstańców – pociski kal.

What got my attention was an aa gun that appeared in the Dirlewanger Group’s attack – the 2cm Flack 38 and fired at the building occupied by the insurgents – 20x139mm rounds easily penetrated brick walls of the house, killing one of the female medics.

Z jakim efektem? Wystarczy wspomnieć scenę z finalnej bitwy w „Szeregowcu Ryanie” (1998).

This kind of weapon was often used not only against strong-points, but also very effectively against the infantry. How effectively? You can see that during the final battle in „Saving Private Ryan” (1998).

One of the „characters”, that appears in several scenes and that is mentioned in dialogues, is the 9x19mm VIS – a Polish pistol based on the Colt M1911, a symbol of the officer and a leader so also an object of envy – as a symbol of an unbreakable stregth („vis” from Latin – „stregth) of the Polish fighting spirit. It’s the gun Stefan fires his first rounds with as a resistance member just after the oath and the gun he uses, already during the Uprsing, to kill - almost ritually, a German soldier.

In the movie we will see that the soldiers of General Berling, who got through the river and joined the insurgents, were not able to help the insurgents much despite their efforts. They knew Warsaw neither as a city, nor the city itself as a place of warfare, which made them die quickly in „hurrraaa” charges. Their weapons were different from those the insurgents were armed with, so they couldn’t support the Uprising with supplies. The fact that this problem was mentioned in the movie is an advantage.

On the other hand, I have numerous doubts concerning the non-battle scenes, such as the one where Stefan and Biedronka are leaving the sewers. Is it possible that in a city shattered with bloody fights there was a place for peaceful walks and street performances for children? Was the life in an occupied city that happy-go-lucky as it it presented in the first scenes of the movie?

Uczynił to jednak powierzchownie.

I went to the cinema to watch „City 44” long after its premiere. I read two or three reviews, I didn’t want to get any attitude influenced by opinions of others. The Warsaw Uprising itself is controversial, it’s meaning has become a topic of many discussions in the last couple of years. That is why I appreciate the fact that Komasa had the courage to make the movie. However, he did it superficially. He skipped, among other things, preprarations for the Uprsing, and – in my opinion, did not show the young people’s boiling will do fight, growing every day under the Nazi’s reigns, and did not underline why the insurgents didn’t want to wait for the Red Army to enter the city.

I don’t mind the fact that Komasa wanted to make the story more contemporary and adjust the form to the audience (the director surely wanted to avoid the style of film adaptations of school readings), since the form includes a realistic image of the apocalypse and constitutes a huge step for the Polish cinema in terms of special effects. A disadventage is the kontent, attractivelly condensed, as in a spectacular trailer. And that is how I perceive „City 44” – as a trailer that might entourage a small percentage of young people to discover the whole truly moving history written down in books, present in other movies and documentaries. And I truly hope that in that case, Komasa’s movie will fulfil its role.

Najlepszy film z czołgiem jaki widziałem? / Best tank-movie I ever saw?

Mam problem z filmami Davida Ayera. I to w drażniący sposób, jakby zamierzony.

I have a problem with David Ayer’s movies. Either as a director, or a scriptwriter, he surely knows how to make movies,  focusing on telling the story as close to reality as it is possble, especially the difficult, the brutal one. He often deals with issues connected with the police or military. But somewhere on the way to the finale, he takes the wrong turn. In an irritating manner, that seems deliberate in a way. And so next to very good „End of Watch (2012), „Harsh Times” (2005) or „Street Kings (2008), not to mention an excellent „Training Day” (2001, for which he wrote the script) one shall find poor „Sabotage” (2013), featuring Schwarzenegger (which makes it even more disappointing), where the main protagonists were irritating, the story was not compelling at all, and dialogues were full of dirty language and nothing more, or „S.W.A.T. (2003), which I remember mostly for a poor racist joke about Poles.

However, coming back to the main theme, when I first learnt about „Fury”, I got really curious about it. For a guy who grew up with „Four Tankmen and a Dog” (1966-70, a Polish TV series set during WW2), a movie about a tank-crew was a real deal. Particularly because this theme is not often present in the cinema. I was also happy that it was Ayer, who – despite the failed „Sabotage”, was the guy behind the camera. That’s why „Fury” immediately got it’s position on my must-see short-list, especially after I got familiar with the trailer.

OK, jestem w kinie.

OK, I’m in the cinema. The film starts and I can already see and feel Ayer’s hand and eye. „Fury” perfectly depicts the dirt of war. The war-death comes unexpected – thrusted with a knife or a bayonet, it tears apart with a bullet, tears into pieces with a burst or an explosion, burns with fire, cruhes with tracks and ruble. It is covered with a thick layer of dirt and dust, pieces of human body. It doesn’t waste time, doesn’t handle delicately, leaves one with a choice: kill or get killed, makes one grow up fast, take what belongs to the victors: either with force or for a chocolate bar or a pack of smokes. A human being is just a piece of meat – covered with rags of a uniform or packed in a can of a tank, but eventually – a piece of meat. There are no heroes, just those who survive. The image of war, visible not only in very powerful battle scenes, is definitely an advantage of this movie. It’s message is that the war never ends quietly. True, it echoes for a long time inside of the head.

Widać to na przykładzie załogi czołgu (należącego do amerykańskiej 2. Dywizji Pancernej znanej pod nazwą "Hell on Wheels").

It is visible in case of the tank’s crew (belonging to the US 2nd Armored Division, nicknamed "Hell on Wheels"). There are two hardened vetereans and a typist for whom the transfer to the front-line seems to be crueal joke of the army bureaucracy. And although Sergeant Don "Wardaddy" Collier, played by Brad Pitt, is the central character and the main relation is a „master-student” one between him and a totally green as a dollar bill Norman (Logan Lerman), every tank man is a distinct, memorable character. The war terror is underlined with a very good music composed by Steven Price. The background piece for the scene with marching SS panzer grenadiers – the patter of 300 pairs of shod army boots combined with a distressing male choir – gave me real shivers. That is why, the ending is even more disappointing – far from the war realism, that was kept well for about 80% of the movie, and making ordinary soldiers the Hollywood heroes.

In the finale, the crew faces a whole batallion of Waffen-SS Panzergrenadiers. The Germans, that outnumber the tankmen and are very well armed (with machine guns and anti-tank weapon), are not able to destroy one immobilized M4A1 Sherman tank (that got his track destroyed by a mine). I can understand the first shock, astonishment and panic caused by a direct, almost point-blank attack, but further attempts of the SS to attack looked more like getting right in front the barrel to get killed and chaotic running around the vehicle. No matter how hopeless in his lack of experience the German commander would be, the unit was surely a mixture of hardened veterans and young, fanatic and determined soldiers, where one could surely find someone capable of leading a successful attack. In reality, the firefight between Warddaddy’s crew and Germas could last no longer than 5-10 minutes.

Sam Wardaddy nawet trzykrotnie raniony śmiertelnie z wyborowego Mausera jest w stanie wejść z powrotem do czołgu i walnąć mowę pożegnalną.

Meanwhile, David Ayer cuts the guys some slack - the barrels of their tank machine guns (.30-06 Browning M1911A4 and .50 BMG Browning M2HB) don’t get overheated and for a long time in the fight with the SS, then tankmen seem to be untouchable (or perhaps it is so due to the lack of shooting skills of the SS). Wardaddy himself, even when shot fatally three times from a scoped Mauser, is able to get inside the tank and give a goodbye speech. And even as a deaman, he looks pretty well – two M24 potato-masher grenades that were thrown inside the tank killed him, but what is visible after the explosion is only a bunch of scratches on his face (and you can surely imagine what two grenades can do with bodies inside a tight space as in a tank). It is weird that military advisors let that happen – one of them was Kevin Vance – in „Fury” he plays one of the Sherman crew-leaders – Sgt. Peterson, and earlier he appeared in two other Ayer’s films: in „End of Watch” and „Sabotage” (where he also worked as an advisor).

I also cannot understand the scene were a young SS grunt, just after the firefight „SS vs Fury”, having spotted Norman under the tank, does not report it to anyone, just Smiles and leave the boy alone, just as if nothing happener, as if he could not see dozens of mutilated bodies of his nordic Kameraden.

To przede wszystkim PzKpfw VI Tiger I – jedyny na świecie w pełni sprawny autentyczny „Tygrys” z II wojny światowej, wypożyczony z Muzeum Czołgów w Bovington.

And now - something that Tiggers like the most…

Ayer’s movie is also a coupe of interesting elements for history and military freaks. It is first of all the PzKpfw VI Tiger I – the only fully working real WW2 „Tiger”, rent from the Bovington Tank Museum. It’s a hell of a deal since in movies the 2nd world war tanks are usually modern vehicles with metals plates attached. When the Tiger appears on the screen, you can hear harsh German orders coming straight from the inside. It was shot very well – not matter what is shown, either it is the whole silhouette, or a part of it, or the barrel with its massive muzzle break, or the tracks – the majesty of this monster remains untouched. The movie Shermans (in versions with 75mm and 76mm gun) also have their charisma, but let’s be honest - everybody was waiting for the Tiger.

What got my attention was the German sniper with a scoped Mauser, and to be more specific – his face veil. First, in 1939 (as we can learn from a great book „The Military Sniper Since 1914” by Martin Pagler) it was considered useless, but then it got its proper recognition and became valued as a part of the camouflage for sharpshooters. Rarely can one see in movies this type of equipment.

What is also interesting is Wardaddy’s weapon – a .45 ACP Smith & Wesson M1917 revolver as his sidearm, exceptional due to custom grips with poster pin-up girls. The firearm is visible very well in the scene where Wardaddy forces Norman to kill a German P.O.W. and while doing so makes him grow up faster to become a soldier. The revolver, present in the list of authorized firearms, but no issued to frontline units, reminded me of the gift Floyd Talbert (Matthew Leitch) in the TV show "Band of Brothers" (2001) received from a berfriended sheriff – it was a .357 Magnum Colt New Service sent with a note „Give’em hell!” as an addiotional  "just in case" firearm. The Americans have a soft spot for revolvers, sometimes even stronger than the one for the forty-five M1911.

Uzupełnieniem uzbrojenia Wardaddy’ego jest Sturmgewehr-44, czyli 7.92x33mm Stg-44: chyba najlepsze połączenie celności, szybkostrzelności i siły rażenia jeśli chodzi o indywidualne uzbrojenie żołnierzy II wojny światowej.

What complements Wardaddy’s armory is a Sturmgewehr-44, that is a 7.92x33mm Stg-44 – probably the best combination of accuracy, rate of fire and firepower as an individual weapon of a WW2 soldier. Athough for me it was a firearm a bit too long for tankcrews for whom a more comfortable gun was created in terms of the size – a .45 ACP M3 submachine gun, called a „grease gun”. It was nicknamed this was due to its visual similarity to the mechanic's tool. Despite the plans, the M3 did not superseded the M1 Thompson as the main submachine gun of the US military. „Grease gun” is nicely depicted in „Fury” – and it’s good because usually it is the Tommy-gun that, just as earlier on battlefields, wins movie castings. But coming back to the Stg-44 – Brad Pitt spreading bullets from his Sturmgewehr makes a hell of a impression – with the „Grease gun” it would not be the case.

Jak bym ocenił „Furię”? Chciałbym, parafrazując słowa padające w filmie, powiedzieć „Best tank-movie I ever saw.” No i jest jeszcze ten piękny, oryginalny "Tygrys"...

How would I rate „Fury”? I wish I could, paraphrasing the words that we can hear in the movie, say „Best tank-movie I ever saw”. If the final scene was different, and it was one of a couple battle scenes, but still the most memorable one becasue of the mistakes, I would say so. Still, „Fury” is worth watching because it surely complements the movie landscape of World War II, especially in case of its ending period in Germany. And you've got the beautiful, genuine "Tiger"...
