IT'S GLOCK O'CLOCK!

Rok 1969. Austriacki kulturysta, Arnold Schwarzenegger, debiutuje w „Herkulesie w Nowym Jorku” (reż. Arthur Allan Seidelman) u boku komika, Arnolda Stanga. Być może właśnie podobieństwo przymiotnika „strong” do nazwiska ów aktora komediowego, lub potężny wygląd Arniego, choć w szczególności pewnie jego niehollywoodzkie nazwisko zdecydowały, że Arnold Schwarzenegger na plakatach był przedstawiany jako „Arnold Strong”.

A.D. 1969. An Austrian body-builder, Arnold Schwarzenegger, makes is debut in „Hercules in New York” (directedy by Arthur Allan Seidelman), playing at comedian Arnold Stang’s side. Perhaps due to the similiarity of the adjvective “strong” to the comedian’s name, or due to Arnold’s massive physique, or particularly a non-Hollywood name, Arnold Schwarzenegger was presented in posters as “Arnold Strong”.

Rok 1982. Gaston Glock, austriacki przedsiębiorca, produkujący wcześniej chłodnice samochodowe, klamki (sic!), zawiasy do drzwi i okien itp., korzystając z wiedzy kilku specjalistów, wprowadza na rynek jeden z najlepszych pistoletów na świecie – Glock 17 kal. 9x19mm. Realizuje zamówienie na 25.000 sztuk "Modelu 17" dla austriackich służb mundurowych, pokonując w przetargu takich gigantów jak Heckler & Koch, SIG-Sauer, Beretta czy FN Herstal.  

A.D. 1982. Gaston Glock, an Austrian entrepreneur, a former manufacturer of radiators, door handles and hinges, with help of a group of specialists, introduces one of the most reliable pistols in the world – the 9x19mm Glock 17. He realizes an order for production of 25.000 Model 17s for Austrian law enforcement and military forces, having defeated such top firearms producers as Heckler & Koch, SIG-Sauer, Beretta or FN Herstal.

Rok 1989. Glock 17 debiutuje w filmie „Przystojniak” (Johnny Handsome, 1989, reż. Walter Hill) w rękach Mickey'a Rourke. Jednak prawdziwy debiut na hollywoodzką skalę następuje chwilę później. 

A.D.1989. The Glock 17 makes his first appearance on screen in Mickey Rourke’s hands in "Johnny Handsome" (1989, directed by by Walter Hill). However, his first Hollywood-size debut is about to happen a bit later. 

Rok 1990. Powstaje „Szklana Pułapka 2” (w reżyserii Renny'ego Harlina) i jest to dla mnie film, od którego na serio rozpoczęła się filmowa kariera austriackiego pistoletu. Jednak, podobnie jak Arnie w „Herkulesie w Nowym Jorku”, tak Glock 17” nie był do końca sobą. I tak, jak w przypadku historii „siłacza z Olimpu”, o wszystkim zadecydowali „spece od filmu”. 

A.D.1990. Die Hard 2: Die Harder (directed by Renny Harlin) has its premiere and for me that's the movie where the film-career of the Austrian handgun really started. However, just as Arnie in "Hercules in New York", the Glock 17 was not entirely itself. And as in case of "the strongman from Olympus", it was all decided by “movie specialists”.

Prócz znanych już z pierwszej części pistoletów maszynowych MP5 (w wersjach A3, A5 i K), terroryści, którzy opanowują lotnisko, siedząc sobie wygodnie w ciepełku nieczynnego kościoła, są uzbrojeni pistolety Glock 17. W słynnej scenie z „kaczką na strzelnicy”, bandzior grany przez Roberta Patricka (który rok później wcieli się w rolę T-1000) zaskakuje dowódcę oddziału SWAT nie tylko celną ripostą, ale i headshotem z tej broni.

Apart from the MP5 submachine guns (in A3, A5 and K versions), known from the first Die Hard, terrorist that take over the airport, while sitting comfortably in a cosy little God-forgotten church, are armed with Glock 17 pistols. In a famous “sitting-duck” scene, a bad guy played Robert Patrick (whom we shall see a year later as T-1000) surprises a SWAT leader not only with a very accurate repartee, but also a headshot from the gun. 

Na początku filmu, John McClane (biegający z Berettą 92FS) załatwia jednego z terrorystów uzbrojonego w Glocka w pomieszczeniu na bagaże. Spluwa trafia do plastikowego worka na dowody (podobnie jak jej były właściciel). Jak facet był w stanie przenieść broń przez lotniskowe wykrywacze metalu? Z odpowiedzią spieszą scenarzyści wkładając w usta Johna McClane’a całą litanię filmowych ściem. 

At the beginning of the movie, John McClane (strapped with a Beretta 92FS) gets rid of one of the bad guys armed with the Glock in a baggage room. The gun is packed into an evidence plastic bag (just like its previous owner). How the punk managed to get the piece through the metal detectors? The script-writers are those to answer as they make John McClane say a litany of goofs.
 

Ile ich wyłapaliście? Oto małe podsumowanie: Glock 7 (może ktoś zrobił literówkę w scenariuszu? ;-)) to gnat produkowany w Niemczech (Niemcy, Austria, oj tam, oj tam! ;-)), wykonany w całości z porcelany (w rzeczywistości broń jest wykonana ze stopu polimerowego „nylon 6”, ale zawiera od cholery metalowych części), więc niewykrywalny dla detektorów metalu (nawet gdyby pistolet był wykonany z materiału niewidzialnego dla wykrywaczy, to alarmową dyskotekę na bramce nadal wywołałaby amunicja). Nie wnikam w wysokość pensji Kapitana Lorenzo.

How many did you spot? Here’s a summary: a Glock 7 (maybe somebody made a typo in the script? ;-)) is a gun produced in Germany (Germany, Austria, whatever!), entirely made of porcelain (it is actually made of a polymer known as a “nylon 6”, but it consists of many metal parts), that is invisible for metal detectors (even if it was made of a material that is invisible for metal detectors, an alarm disco would be set off by ammo). How much money Chief Lorenzo earns a month, I don’t really care. 

I tak oto Glock 17 rozpoczął filmową karierę jako Glock 7, tak jak Arnie Schwarzenegger jako Arnold Strong. Choć domyślam się, o co mogło chodzić scenarzystom. Terroryści, byli wojskowi, mieli dysponować bronią, która przewyższała jakością i siłą ognia uzbrojenie policji. Najłatwiej było stworzyć super-pistolet, tak jak w pierwszej części, by podkreślić europejskie pochodzenie Hansa Grubera i jego ludzi, Karla uzbrojono w egzotyczny wówczas (w późnych latach osiemdziesiątych) dla wielu Amerykanów karabin Steyr AUG.

That’s how the Glock 17 started its film career as the Glock 7 just like Arnie did as Arnold Strong. However, I guess I know what the script-writers had in mind. The terrorists, ex-military guys, had to have firearms that would surpass cop's guns in quality and firepower. The easiest way was to create a super-gun, just like in the first part, to underline the fact that Hans Gruber and his men were from Europe, Karl was armed with a Steyr AUG assault rifle, exoctic at that time (late 1980s) for many Americans.

 

Świat filmu oczywiście rządzi się po prostu swoimi prawami (vide: brak konieczności zmiany magazynka czy dłuuuugi czas potrzebny na detonację granatów rzuconych w głównego bohatera ;-)), ale niektóre z nich powinny dotyczyć tylko filmów science-fiction. ;-) Co nie zmienia faktu, że "Szklana Pułapka 2" należy do moich ulubionych filmów i mocno przyczyniła się do pasji, której efektem jest fanpage Keep Shooting - Guns in Movies oraz ten oto blog. :-)

The world of movies is governed by its own rules (such us: no need to change a mag or a really long delay time for grenades thrown at the main character ;-)), but some of the should really concern only the science-fiction films. ;-) However, "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" is still one of my favourite movies and influenced my passion that resulted in creating Keep Shooting - Guns in Movies and this blog. :-)

P.S. Ciekawostka: poniższa scena, która ostatecznie została usunięta z dystrybuowanej na świecie wersji, wyjaśnia, skąd terroryści wzięli stroje malarzy. Pojawia się w niej również Glock 17, w wersji z tłumikiem.
